Mice Tales | Spring Alphabet Soup

Mice Tales in Spring

For my two favourite mice...

'Twas a cool night in spring, and all through the house
A creature was stirring. It was a mouse.
A fluffy little chap, whose name was Dorie
And WAIT! Another one too, who called herself Aurie.

Aurie was all gloomy, glum and forlorn
For her mouse teacher had given her something to learn.
She needed to study her alphabet well
And then she needed to learn how to spell.

"Why?" squeaked Aurie, "Should I learn how to spell?"
"All the other mice can't, and do just swell."
"You must," insisted Dorie, "so you can read the food labels
And choose the best treats left on the shelves and the tables."

"For there once was a mouse who just couldn't read
And he chose rat poison on which to feed
He just couldn't read what the bottle said
And now, the poor fella is cold and dead."

"Ooh," shivered Aurie, ruffling her brow.
"It's so very hard, I just don't know how."
"Don't worry, said Dorie, "I'll teach you to spell
And then you'll be able to read food boxes well."

So down to the kitchen, the two mice scurried
Following their noses,  up to the countertop they hurried
"Looks what's here," declared Dorie with a whoop
"A delicious bowl of warm alphabet soup!"

"I see an A, a B and a C,"
Said Dorie peering over the rim gingerly.
"There's an I and an L and also a Y,"
Exclaimed Aurie excited, as the pasta floated on by.

"Aurie, do you see the I and the E well?
Remember this rule when you spell.
I before E, except after C."
"I see, I see," squeaked Aurie. "Like in my name- A-U-R---I-E."

"I see a T, an M and a P
I think that pea is calling to me.
Mmmm!! Let me get closer," Aurie demanded.
And with a running jump, into the bowl with a huge SPLASH she landed.

"Aurie!! Get out of the bowl. This is no joke."
"No!" refused Aurie doing the back stroke.
"I thought that the X marked the spot
Where on that dot, land I ought."

At that instant, on came the kitchen light
And the mistress of the house, nearly fainted with fright.
Her scream pierced the night, as she looked down in terror
At the two little mice in her alphabet soup dinner.

The mice, in a split second, high tailed it out of there
And once at a safe distance declared how fun it was, the lady to scare.
"And also delicious!" said Aurie, slurping soup off her tail.
"Who knew spelling was so exciting, we must do it again!"
