Monday Morning Blooms | Peony Floral Arrangements
Happy Monday!
What can be more therapeutic than peony gazing? Can you imagine more than 300 petals unfurling from a single tight bud and into a lush frilly, flouncy flower?
These gorgeous beauties bloom in my zone 5 garden around mid May and into the beginning of June. The weight of these massive flowers pulls them down so I have to prop the peony plant up well before it blooms.
With a rain storm approaching, I decided to clip these showy peonies and bring them in, ruffles and flounces and all, before the rain pulls them down and into the mud. Making peony floral arrangements is one of my favourite things to do in May.
How To Arrange Fresh Peonies
1. Cut peonies in the early morning.
2. Cut stems at an angle and place cut flower stems immediately in a container of fresh, cool water.
3. Peonies are ready to be cut for indoor blooming when the buds begin to show colour or start to unfurl slightly.
4. Cut buds will last indoors for a week. Fully open peonies will last in indoor floral arrangements for a day or two before the petals start to fall off.
5. Since peony heads are heavy, I prefer to cut the stems down and place them in low vases/ containers as low flower arrangements. Experiment with different containers and don't just stick to traditional vases.
6. Place fresh cut peony floral arrangement in a cool spot in the house, away from direct sunlight and change water daily.
Lush pale candy pink peonies arranged in a teapot. A low peony centerpiece on the living room center table is sure to start a conversation, not block it. |
