The Low Picket Fence...
A wise man once said, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”
I take my first step today, as I set up my blog on two of my interests- food and garden - and I invite you to join me in my journey. A journey that all began with a little corner lot and a low, picket fence.
A few years ago, my husband and I decided we had outgrown the big city & bright lights. We were ready to trade it all in for a quieter pace of life, a little more space and a lot more fresh air.
So, we moved out of Mies Van der Rohe Ville and into the Land of Ernest Hemingway and Frank Lloyd Wright. We have a charming, one hundred year old American Four Square, modest in size but large at heart, positioned on a little corner lot bounded by a low picket fence.
The hundred year old house and garden required some work to make it our own. So, we rolled up our sleeves and went to work. We had inherited a prairie style backyard from the previous owners, which while lovely, was not particularly my style. So over the last 3 years we slowly transformed it into a garden that was an extension of our own personalities and created our own little haven.
Our work did not go unnoticed. The low fence gave daily strollers a good view of our garden. As people walking their dogs, or hurrying to the train station passed by, they would slow down and peep in to check out the recent developments. Little children would peep through the fence slats and point excitedly, in their eyes, to some hidden gem. We had the bold lookers who stopped and drunk everything in and the shy ones who covertly snuck a glance without breaking step. As they looked in and enjoyed our garden, we entertained ourselves looking out at them and enjoying their expressions of delight. Over the years, we have made many friends and earned a few admirers along the way, thanks to the little, low picket fence.
Passersby have paid many compliments and have had as many questions along the way. So, it is to these very amblers that I dedicate my blog. They have inspired me to start this blog and share our home and garden transformation.
On this journey, I share with you my design and decoration projects, tips and tricks to create wonder and enchantment and how to create delight in your own homes. All this without breaking the bank.
You don’t need a lot of money or a formal education in design to make your spaces special. All you need is little curiosity, a bit of imagination and a lot of heart. And we all have that.
My hope is that you might find some inspiration from my ideas and that you will take your own, first steps to trying something new, to making your spaces an extension of yourself and to creating lovely spaces of your own to enjoy.
If I can do it, so can you….
